Documentary Shoot 1 Reflection

For our first shoot we prioritised our scenic shots as most of our documentary focuses on the beaches and coasts of Guernsey. We made sure that our main shots to collect were mid shots, close ups, Extreme close ups and long shots.

  • our main objection for this shoot was to film the sea and also collect sound by the shore as our documentary is mostly about coastal life. My main role during this shoot was collect sounds of crashing waves and the water which I had a few issues with due to the wind. To make the shots of the beach more interseting we started introducing different objects into frame for example we made a sand castle and made it our main focus with the sea in the background. This was to ensure we added some interest into our shots and to also represent what people may get up to on the beach.

  • We didn’t just film the coastal beaches but also the nearby life. We filmed close ups of flowers and different plants to show what kind of life is around our coastal beaches. the shot is nice however the wind was a bit to harsh so we didnt get the perfect shot of the flowers and plants.

  • To divert from the coastal life we went to town and filmed some of the places the would look appealing to a tourist.

Vampire Representation

Reflection:

Nosferatu represents a time of disease and tragedy as the vampire can be seen metaphorically represnting the spanish flu while others in the movie can be seen as the rest of society trying to run away to save their lives. other elements of this film like rats also represent disease and we see rats throughout this film as well as the vampire being represented as rat like.

Documentary short analysis

This documentary is a Expository documentary

Expository Docuentary: Expository documentaries set up a specific point of view or argument about a subject and often feature “voice of God” style voice-over. For expository documentaries, the cinematographer is responsible for collecting footage that supports and strengthens the spoken argument of the film, including stock footage, archival footage, b-roll, or re-enactments of historical events. The Dust Bowl (2012) is filmmaker Ken Burns’ historical account of the disastrous drought that occurred during the Great Depression. Burns uses photos and facts to supplement the causes and impact of one of the worst droughts to plague North American farmland.

music changes from mellow to crazy and chaotic

The music in this short documentary plays a massive part in creating a story for the audience. When we finally get to see what the exreme motor sport they have been tlaking about, it is paired with heavy sreaming music. This represents how dangerous this motor sport is. It way also be a suprise for some of the audience if they have no clue what type of motor sport this is.

Music suddenly stops playing at add dramatic affect

At the end of the chaotic sequence where we see what kind of motor sport this is, There is a sudden stop to the music as we see a flipped over car and a fire fighter. this visual along with the sound signifys that the chaos is over.

Motnage at the end of the documentary to show the commuity i a postive way

At the end of the edit we are met with a montage to show the community of extreme motor sports. This montage helps to break the stereotypes of the demogrpahics and psychographics seen in extreme motor sports and helps us to be more open when it comes to these particular communitys.

A Documetary Truth

An important idea :
“John Grierson’s definition of documentary filmmaking – ‘the creative treatment of actuality’ – summarises its overarching fallacy. The fallacy being that documentaries often purport to reveal truths, however by the very act of documenting actuality, the director inadvertently alters its ‘truth’.”

Shawshank redemption final essay + feedback

After watching ShawShank, we were asked to write an essay on how the themes are communicated during Andy’s escape.

Down below, you will see my shawshank redemption essay and my teachers feedback

Teachers Feedback:

‘Shame you didn’t do the intro. You always need to place the film in context and also describe some of the narrative features of the film. You can then return to these points later in your close analysis.

The specific examples are good and when you get into the impact – such as the crane in the rain shot, your analysis if great. After that comes the link, when you link back to the significance, which will be something about genre, narrative or theme…which you do at the intro’.

Reflection:

  • I need to make sure a write an intro to show the question and how I can approach it
  • Make sure I link back to anaylsis mentioned in each paragraph

Forward focus:

To make my textual analysis better for next time I need to make sure I write an introduction to introduce the question asked and show how I’m going to approach the question but also what show what kind of narrative/movie it is. I also need to make sure that I link back to the question asked to make sure I draw a direct analysis to the question.

British Social Realism And This Is England

Here are five reasons why This Is England fits with the movie genre British Social Realism:

  •  Characters

Dossier This is england

All characters introduced during the narrative are mostly lower to middle class and some also being thugs. this represents the harsh reality of the lower and working class in Britian and is also what the movie genre itself is based around.

  • Setting

  • Mise-En-Scene

This Is England remains a powerful indictment of racism 10 years on

The Mise-en-scene helps refelct the lower and working class during the 80s. the main characters are seen wearing grungy clothing along with tattoos which gives the audience a sense that they are tough young men.

  • Editing

This Is England - Shane Meadows - Film - The New York Times

Editing is used to help the narrative by using limited camera angles to represent that the characters are trapped and also by the use of filters. by de-saturating the footage can help the narrative give a sense of bleakness and shows the harsh reality of their lives.
